First, set the mood. Choose soft, gentle music to soothe your sweetie's tired soul. Ambient and instrumental music work best for massage. Death Metal is not appropriate for obvious reasons! Place towels on the spot on the bed (or other location) where you're going to give the massage. This is to keep the massage oil from staining the comforter and sheets. Use massage oil or cream. Don't skimp. You want to apply it liberally so you don't have drag when you're giving your massage.
When giving a massage, you want to be firm but not too hard. You don't want to hurt your sweetie, and you don't want to tire out. You want to feel the muscle move underneath your hands. Work slowly, using your finger pads, palms, thumbs, or heel of your hand.
There are a few rules about giving massages: Avoid bones and joints so that you don't injure your sweetie. Never push on the spine, and be careful around the ribs and shoulder blades. Watch knees, elbows, and shoulders, all locations where there are joints. You certainly don't want to dislocate a limb or otherwise harm your sweetie!
You'll find tension in the shoulders from your sweetie being hunched over a desk all day or from daily emotional stress. You want to loosen the muscles in the shoulders. Grab both shoulders from behind and use your thumbs to push down. Then switch to the heel of your hand and push radiating out from the spine. Don't massage the spine! As you push, you'll feel the tension loosening. You may also use your forearms. Use your body weight to massage. And go slowly. Use a variety of movements from tight circles to broad movement from the spine outward. You may even want to use a tennis ball and roll it around the shoulders using the palm of your hand.
Position your hands over each side of the lower back around the spine with fingers pointed out. Press down with the heels of your hands, which will be next to the spine. Rock back and forth, and use the weight of your body to provide the pressure. You may also do this same movement but using your fists instead of your open hands. Lots of tension is in the lower back, plus many people suffer from lower back pain. This exercise will help alleviate that pain.
Place your hands from behind on either side of the neck and squeeze. You want to position your fingers on the sides of the neck with your palms against back of neck. Create pressure by pressing fingers together. Don't massage the front of neck or you'll choke your sweetie! Have your sweetie lie down on his or her back, with you standing at their head, and grip base of neck with fingers. Pull towards you.
Grip like an alien face hugger but from the back, and knead your fingers into the scalp. Don't be shy. Use lots of pressure. Rotate your fingers in small circles on the scalp. Use pressure and push your fingers from the base of the skull around the top of the scalp. You may use either one hand or both hands. Once you finish massaging, you may want to scratch your sweetie's head. That feels incredibly good.
It's easy to forget the hands, but don't! A hand massage is ideal after a day working on a keyboard whether it's a computer or a piano. Spread your sweetie's palm, and press your thumbs into the palm. Use pressure and spread the hand open. Pull on the fingers and rotate fingers. You may hear a pop with each finger stretching.
If your sweetie stands on their feet all day, they'll reward you properly for a foot massage. Press your thumbs into the arches. Grab by the toes and pull the foot upwards so that it flexes. Pull the toes. Rub in between the toes with your fingers.
Use light, full hand strokes over body to come to the end of the massage.
